Tim Harford claims that Italian schools should require Chinese rather than Latin.

Am I the only person still living who took three years of Latin in a public Junior High School?

I thought that the real advantage of Latin was that the language was dead and likely to stay that way. Even if the number of Latin words that I remember after 50 years aren't likely to use up all the fingers on my left hand, it still was better than Conversational French.

How many dialects of Chinese are there anyway?
