Move Over, Pat Robertson

You've got some nutty competition in the Big Easy.

N.O. Mayor Ray Nagin sayeth:

"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.

"Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."

Nagin also claims that it's God's intention to have a major American city populated by one race:

"It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans - the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said. "This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."

This is just a hunch, but... Knowing the mainstream media, I'm guessing coverage of this statement will be far lighter than if a southern white mayor made the same proclamation about keeping a major American city as "majority lilywhite". I'm also going out on a limb by saying that the Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons will be generally quiet on this one.

Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"

Why is killing between "brothers" implied as being worse than any other 'type' of killing?

I usually don't click the links inside the posts, but those quotes seemed so outrageous I had to see if Doug had made them up. Alas, Doug proved to be accurate...

My guess is this gets very little press.

So if God hit New Orleans

So if God hit New Orleans with a hurricane to punish us for being in Iraq, and God also wants New Orleans to be a majority black city, does that mean God blames blacks for the Iraq war? :stupid:

No, it must mean God wanted

No, it must mean God wanted to make an example of someone over the Iraq war, and the white population of New Orleans was as good a scapegoat as any.

Why do all the black

Why do all the black politicians get away with the old school preaching?! I can't remember the last time I heard a white politico say some truly old style colorful speech lines without being forced to roll over and apologize like a good dog for offending some goddam race, sex, gender, blah blah blah.

Nagin's comments are making the news -- last night I saw a bit on one of the local Washington, D.C., TV news programs and this morning Nagin made page A04 in the Washington Post.

I found Nagin's call for a race-based repopulation of New Orleans a surprising theme for a Martin Luther King Day speech.

Politics often works as an

Politics often works as an "us against them" dynamic, especially for someone like Nagin who has zip going for him right now. So it looks like "old" New Orleans against the "New" iteration. Except that "Old" N.O. has pretty much resettled elsewhere. Bye bye votes. So long Mayor.

Here is a post from a blogger in New Orleans on the Nagin speech

Included in that post is a link to a video file of the full Nagin speech, which is worth listening to if you're interested in the context of his remarks.

"Why is killing between “brothers” implied as being worse than any other ‘type’ of killing?"

That reminds me of when that DC sniper was on the lose and was driving around killing people. Then, one day he shot a kid and the police came out said "now he's crossed the line." What the hell? The guy is going around and shooting people but once he shoots a kid he's crossed the line? Aren't they ALL crossing the line from non murder to murder?

As far as the rest of your post goes, in America it is okay for a person of color to say whatever the heck they want to say. Nothing is out of bounds for them.

You will be shocked to hear

You will be shocked to hear the Beeb has not said a peep about Nagin's daft comments. Wonder if they would have reported on it if he had been white & Republican.:end:
