More Flag Nonsense

I found this discription of how to dispose of a tattered American Flag at the website of a New York State Senator:

The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning in private or as part of a ceremony conducted by a veterans organization.

Here's another one:

About 4,000 worn and tattered flags were collected in the past month from Northumberland, Snyder, Union, Montour and Columbia counties.

One man arrived at the public ceremony carrying two perfectly folded, faded and torn flags, carefully turning them over for a proper disposal.

According to a 68-year-old rite for disposing unserviceable flags, all were inspected and burned by members of the 17th and 18th American Legion Districts and Sons of the Legion.

Since congress does not appear to have a problem with this kind of flag burning, that makes me curious about exactly what kind of flag burning congress considers to be not respectful disposal but also not a sort of free speech.

Burning a tattered flag to show respect constitutes free speech in my opinion even if done in private, burning it as a symbol of dissent clearly does as well, and is actually a far better way of doing it than could potentially be done.

You could for example:

Fly your flag with fun shapes cut out of it.
Drape it across your garbage can.
Write fun message on it with permanent marker.
Drape it across the occasional mudpuddle and walk over it.
Cut it up and glue it back together in a mixed up arrangement.
Use it to shield your plants from inclement weather.
Cut it up into small squares and use the squares as badges in your next big protest parade.
Drag one behind your car on the way to work.
Use it as a dartboard.

What congress is actually hoping to do is to turn flag-burning as a symbol of dissent (free speech) into an illegal activity and thus a perfect way to commit an act of civil disobedience. If they are successful flag "desecration" will likely become more popular than ever.

If it becomes illegal we could simply write "FREE SPEECH" on our flags in big letters before burning them, and getting arrested will just reinforce the point.
