Finally, almost a choice...

After years of Yasser Arafat's autocratic rule, Palestinians are now having municipal elections, where they will get to pick their local officials...from Fatah or Hamas. It doesn't look so bright, but after years of Arafat and the recent intifada, it can't get worse, can it?

The results might not be entirely bad:

Some Palestinians think sharing power will force Hamas to moderate its stance toward Israel. "When you move from the opposition to the government, you have to become more pragmatic," said Hasan Khreisheh, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

On the other hand, I shouldn't forget that the choice is still between Fatah and Hamas.

This is not on the topic,

This is not on the topic, and I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned on Catallarchy, but Michael Crichton gave a fantastic speech on global warming not long ago.

Apparently, Crichton has a new book coming out; a character very much resembling Martin Sheen meets a grisly death in it.

Scott, Yeah, I posted

Yeah, I posted excerpts to that speech back when it first appeared in the blogosphere. I wanted to blog about his recent article in Parade Magazine about his new book on the same topic (as you can no doubt conclude from my reading habits, I am a paragon of literary sophistication).
