Shoulda, woulda, coulda

France learned a valuable lesson the hard way. Had their Socialist policymakers listened to sensible economic arguments beforehand, they could've avoided this:

[France's] finance minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, said that the 35-hour week had burdened the state with additional social charges and that it had demoralized millions of workers.


Let's hope the French government is successful at fixing what they broke. Considering that taking away a wasteful social program is akin to taking candy from a baby, they've got a tough task in front of them.
