Library construction bid: Non-union firms not allowed

Bay County, a county in central Michigan, is accepting construction bids to build a new main library and several branch libraries around the county. The catch? Your construction firm had better sign on with local unions, otherwise, don’t even bother submitting a bid. The Mackinac Center of Public Policy, a libertarian-leaning think tank focusing on Michigan events and issues, correctly denounces the stipulation and points out the lack of competition will result in a pricier project. The higher cost will likely mean a scaled-back project and, ultimately, fewer library resources than they would’ve accomplished by allowing unrestricted competition.
